It is my very real hope, dear reader, than when you get this newsletter I am sitting on a beach with a book on my lap, protected by a lot of sunscreen. That’s right, I’m on holiday right now, and I could not be happier about it!
Between moving and working this year, there’s been a lot going on so The Gentleman and I decided that we would take a week off to go somewhere quiet and recharge our batteries a bit. To us that looks like a lot of good food, sleep, and—naturally—books.
This prompted me to ask myself: What am I taking to read on this holiday?
I often take time on holidays to read outside of the genres I write. I also like to keep an eye on what’s popular and what people are talking about, so I usually pick a few buzzy books.1
Here’s what I came up with before I left, although considering that I always read off of an iPad while away, the final count might look different:
Leave me a comment letting me know what books would be on your holiday reading list!
Book news
Evelyne Redfern series
Regular readers of this newsletter will know that A Traitor in Whitehall has been out in paperback for five days (!), and what a great five days it’s been! I love seeing photos from all around the world of where people are finding the book in their local stores, so please keep them coming!
And speaking of books coming out…Betrayal at Blackthorn Park is a few short days away from coming out! I’m really excited to show you what is in store for Evelyne Redfern’s next case, especially as she’s tested with her first official foray as an SIU field agent. If you’re looking for all of the preorder links for the print, ebook, or audiobook versions of the book, you’ll find them here:
What you might have missed…
In honor of Betrayal at Blackthorn Park’s upcoming release, I’ve written and recently released a short story that happens between A Traitor in Whitehall and Betrayal at Blackthorn Park, so be sure to give that a read.
I also wrote about the real life inspiration for the secret wartime weapons research and development facility Blackthorn Park that is at the center of the book. You can find that here.
Postscript
What I’ve been watching: I’ll be honest with you guys, I’ve been watching Love Is Blind UK while doing a lot of admin ahead of my trip (like scheduling this newsletter). I’m not going to recommend it or claim that it’s good, but it’s kind of perfect background television.
What I’ve been listening to: I’ve been really stuck on Hozier’s “Too Sweet” recently, and I can’t get it out of my head! Not that I’m complaining…
What I’ve been knitting: I have been knitting a lavender Olive Cardigan2 for Mum, and it’s turning out beautifully! This is the perfect time of year for knitting in the UK because every bit of me wants to feel cozy.
What I’ve been cooking: Nothing makes me more nostalgic for New York City than thinking about really good bagels. On the August bank holiday weekend, I decided to turn my hand to the New York Times’ recipe and turned out some pretty respectable bagels!
These are not always the same thing.
My second!
Planning what to read on holidays is always so exciting 😆
Carley Fortune FOR SURE would be on my vacay list (if I could wait that long after the book came out!)
