Whenever I talk to my sister about her reading plans, she will remind me that well-made plans don’t really work for her. She’s a mood reader through and through.
I suppose I am to some extent as well, especially during certain times of year. In autumn I want nothing more than books that are cozy and perhaps a little witchy. In winter, I want atmospheric reads with big, sweeping narratives that carry me along for hundreds of pages.
I sat down this summer to have a think about what I’ve been reading recently. Here are the book vibes I’ve been going after:
Contemporary fiction about complicated families that may or may not end in dramatic implosions like The Homemade God by Rachel Joyce
Rich, atmospheric historical novels filled with quirky characters like Still Life by Sarah Winman (bonus points if they are set in a fabulous vacation destination)
Thrillers with summer vibes (not necessarily set at the beach) and unexpected twists like The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
London-based, upper crust-critical mysteries like Charlotte Vassell’s Detective Inspector Caius Beauchamp series
Abandoned garden or house novels that give me the same vibes as Kate Morton’s The Lake House

If you have any recommendations for me that fit the bill, leave me a comment and also let me know what types of books you’re craving this summer!
Finding Flora by Elinor Florence! It’s about a young Scottish woman who jumps from a train, west of Calgary, and builds a homestead on her own in the early 1900’s. There is mystery, intrigue, thriller, friendship between women and mostly historical fiction. It was un-put-down-able. It was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.
I loved The God of the Woods - need to find something similar!
Have you read The Correspondent by Virginia Evans, yet? Epistolary novel. I think you’d love it!
